Gum disease, known medically as periodontal disease, can be easy to ignore at first. That’s why we take gum disease seriously at Addisville Dental. If you’re suffering from gum disease, call our office to schedule an appointment today.
Gum disease is an infection that attacks your sensitive gum tissue. Gum disease is a progressive condition that occurs in two stages: gingivitis and periodontitis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, half of American adults aged 30 or older have experienced some kind of gum disease in their lives. But just because gum disease is common doesn’t mean it’s not a serious health concern.
Gingivitis is the mildest form of gum disease. It causes redness, swelling, puffiness and bleeding in the gums. Because gingivitis presents with little to no pain, many patients don’t notice the symptoms. If diagnosed at this stage, gum disease is easily treated and reversed.
Untreated, gum disease can advance to periodontitis. At this stage, the infected gums begin to recede and separate from the teeth, creating gaps (called periodontal pockets) which fill with bacteria and pus. Over time, the infection spreads to the tooth roots, jawbones and surrounding tissues. The teeth can become loose and may have to be removed.
Gum disease is most often caused by poor or inadequate oral hygiene. Without good daily care and regular cleanings, bacteria forms on the surfaces of your teeth, causing plaque and tartar. As the toxins from this bacterial plaque attack the gums, they cause infections that spread throughout the mouth.
Other health and lifestyle factors may contribute to your risk of gum disease. Smoking, age, inadequate nutrition, diabetes, stress, and hormonal changes due to puberty, pregnancy or menopause can also cause gum disease. If you are at increased risk of gum disease, be sure to speak to our dentist about prevention.
Gingivitis is easily treated with good oral home care and regular professional cleanings. Our dentist may also recommend an antibacterial toothpaste or mouth rinse to help flush out the infection. If you’re experiencing periodontitis, our dental team can help restore your oral health. At Addisville Dental, we offer the following gum disease treatments:
